Green Lantern sneak peek – WonderCon, you rock!

Hal Jordan has never been hotter

Green Lantern Movie 2011

Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern

WonderCon has always been exciting -  widely anticipated releases of memorabilia, back issues of comics, new costume releases and awesome home-made costumes. This year, however, the most exciting thing to come out of WonderCon, is footage!

Over the weekend, Warner Brothers released footage at WonderCon of some scenes from the highly anticipated Green Lantern movie to be released June 17th. And it is AWESOME!!

Not only do we get a peek at the world of Oa, but we’re also introduced to a few of the characters – Abin-Sur, Sinestro and Tomar-Re. The design of the film and the cinematography look fantastic – fresh, exciting and very extraterrestrial. It also looks like there will be a ton of action in the film – sure to keep the guys as captivated as the girls (we don’t really need anything more than Ryan to keep us captivated!)  What’s most exciting? This footage is only in 2D – I can’t wait to see the 3D version!

Unfortunately, we can’t show you the new movie costumes just yet; though if you’re willing to take a leap of faith, there are a few available for pre-order. Either way, be sure to check back – they’ll be here soon!

“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!”

Dying to Throw a Halloween Costume Party

When my former roommate and I moved to Seattle in 1994, we only knew two people, but we didn’t let that stop us from throwing a Halloween costume party. We invited my cousin and her tattooed lawyer-student fiancé, the two grunge guys (one was a quilt maker with a goatee and body piercings) from the apartment downstairs, the always-tipsy woman in the triplex’s third apartment, the building fix-it guy that she had a hopeless crush on, our landlord who worked as a clown on the side, the telephone repairman who we’d never actually met in person, our favorite highly-caffeinated baristas, the local video sales clerks, and whoever else we met in our new neighborhood.

For that first party, we wanted to pick a costume theme that would get everyone excited about dressing up—something that would give room for creativity, morbidity and, of course, some really good laughs. I don’t remember which idea came first, the one for our Halloween costumes or the one for our Halloween costume theme, but we couldn’t wait to share either with our new friends.

The knee-whacking figure-skating scandal of the 1994 Winter Olympics was still torturing TV viewers, but it helped our theme take root. I pulled out a couple of old figure-skating outfits, made a “Tonya Tapper” club from an old wrapping paper tube, and caked on the make-up. My roommate bandaged up her knee, pulled her hair back in a tight bun, and smeared on mascara for a tear-stained look. (I think she wore Mickey Mouse ears, too.) Then the two of us yanked on our skates and transformed into Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan—two celebrities who we were totally disgusted with at that point. Our theme: “Come As Your Favorite Dead Celebrity, Or One You Wish Were Dead.” We had a blast, and the party was a hit. Nearly all of our guests dressed up in Halloween costumes that fit the theme.

Who would you dress up as? I’d love to know. You may have missed this party, but feel free to use our theme idea to throw your own costume extravaganza. There is certainly no end to the possibilities of overly publicized, obnoxious celebrities in the media. BuyCostumes.com is a fantastic place to find tons of outlandish Halloween accessories to transform yourself into a celebrity that completely turns your stomach. And, of course, there are plenty of dead celebs to choose from. To get your imagination going, here are 10 ideas.

ANNOUNCING KICK-OFF FOR WISCONSIN SEASONAL WORKFORCE COALITION
Connecting employment opportunities across the seasons
Seasonal Work = Future Opportunities
July 6, 2009, Milwaukee – Local Employers and Community Based Organizations form coalition to connect jobs across the seasons – over 2,000 seasonal opportunities are available through the coalition’s efforts over the calendar year.
On Monday, July 13, United Way of Greater Milwaukee will present a $75,000 grant to Interfaith Older Adult Programs – Employment Services. Interfaith will partner with an identified group of hiring companies to develop a coalition of employers and community based organizations that will connect area job seekers to possible year around employment. The goal of the project is to provide seasonal employment opportunities as a way to develop workers for permanent positions as they gain new skills as well as offering a bridge to jobs for the unemployed. Seasonal employment has been identified as a way for individuals with barriers to learn on the job work ethics and gain transferable skills that can be used in numerous industries.
Activities for the grant include: employer sponsored training for call center/customer service and warehouse picking and packing; creation of a Wisconsin Seasonal Workforce Coalition; development of a Coalition Website that includes a “Calendar of Hiring;” job coaching at employers worksite by community based agencies; and coordination of transportation. Employer partners will assist in planning and sponsoring exit party/job fairs at the end of hiring seasons to introduce workers to the next seasonal employment opportunities. Jobing.com will provide a grant to develop a website for the Coalition that will list a calendar of seasonal hiring opportunities and highlight the participating partners. In addition, funding will be used to coordinate transportation to Waukesha and other locations not located on a bus line.
The following employers are partnering on the grant: BUYSEASONS, UPS, Marcus Corporation, Christopher Morgan, Jobing.com, and Design Specialists. Community Based Organizations that collaborated in the writing of the grant include: Interfaith Older Adult Programs – Employment Services, Center for Veteran’s Issues, Milwaukee God Squad, Policy Studies, Inc., Goodwill Industries, and Laos Family Center.

Welcome to Monster Matcher, the place where singles can meet other creatures of the night in time for Halloween! This week’s monster looking for his match is Frankenstein. He’s a tough yet sensitive guy looking for someone to scare everyone in town with. Although he’s made of human body parts, this energetic monster’s personality is anything but dead and he’s always the life of the party. Interested in learning more about this eligible bachelor? Interested In: Women

Hair Color: Brown

About Me: I’m a gentle giant who loves long walks on the beach and romantic dinners (but not candle lit). When I’m not being chased all other town by the local villagers, I enjoy staying in and watching romantic comedies.

My last wife tended to yell at me a lot (especially when I’d forget to take out the trash), so I’m looking for someone pretty mellow and easy going.

I consider myself to be a fun monster who loves to laugh and have a good time. If you’re the same way you should give me a call! :)
